The Jasmin Leila Award — Sponsored walk

(With thanks to abuelo for his help in compiling this website)

                                                                                                                                                                                     James Sidaway

I started from outside the Royal Geographical Society on Aug 29th, at the end of the

IBG-RGS annual conference, by walking through Hyde Park to Kings Cross Station,

to take a train to Cambridgeshire.

For the most part I walked alone, although Jasmin’s big sister, Naushine Shama,

walked with me to Kings Cross and for the last part in Norfolk, I was joined by Jasmin’s

abuelo, Trevor (my dad, her grandfather)

The map and photographs cover the latter stages of the walk that follows a

Roman military road (the Peddars Way)

Peddars Way is highlighted by the dotted red line

It runs from South Pickenham to Holme next the Sea

In some parts, the Peddars Way is a minor road crossing a number of major

highways but in most parts, especially in north Norfolk, it is little more than a cart track

It starts on the border between Norfolk and Suffolk, just south of the Little Ouse

and runs all the way up through Norfolk, ending  on the north Norfolk coast at

Holme next the Sea, where it meets the Norfolk Coast Path.

The Little Ouse;                                  And shortly after, the River Thet

The official Peddars Way runs for more than 70 km, adding to this the extra distance to

get to and from overnight accommodation made that part of the walk around 80 km

On the last day of the Peddars Way section, Jasmin’s abuelo (Grandad), drove up to

Sedgeford and checked in at the King Wiliam IV Inn, this is about 3 Km from the coast and

the end of Peddars Way

The plan was to meet up some way down the Peddars Way, south of a village called Fring

Unfortunately, we’d not reckoned on the complete absence of a mobile network in the area.

He was forced to head off not really knowing where I was and there was a distinct possibility

that our paths wouldn’t cross

                                                            But they did!

Abuelo claimed that it was all down to his timing and “dead reckoning”

calculations

And sometime later at the King William IV Hostelry in Sedgeford
